Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
  6. Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in the additional 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.
Baking
  1. Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
  2. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the tops have cracked slightly.
  3. Remove cookies from the oven and immediately press one chocolate heart candy into the center of each cookie.
  4. Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.

Notes

For a deeper chocolate flavor, consider using dark chocolate hearts or adding cocoa powder to the dough. To make gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
