Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- In a large bowl, cream together the softened butter and 1 cup of granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Beat in the egg and vanilla extract until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
- In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
- Gradually add the dry mixture to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
- Roll the dough into 1-inch balls and roll each ball in the additional 1/2 cup of granulated sugar.
Baking
- Place the sugar-coated dough balls on the prepared baking sheet about 2 inches apart.
- Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are lightly golden and the tops have cracked slightly.
- Remove cookies from the oven and immediately press one chocolate heart candy into the center of each cookie.
- Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for about 5 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Notes
For a deeper chocolate flavor, consider using dark chocolate hearts or adding cocoa powder to the dough. To make gluten-free, substitute all-purpose flour with a gluten-free blend.
