Ingredients

Main Ingredients
  • 4 large sweet potatoes, peeled and sliced into even rounds Look for medium-sized sweet potatoes that feel firm and heavy.
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter For creating a rich buttery flavor.
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed tightly Caramelizes beautifully during baking.
  • 1/2 cup water Essential for creating a syrupy consistency.
  • 1 tsp cinnamon For warm, spicy notes that compliment the sweet potatoes.
  • 1/4 tsp nutmeg Adds depth and warmth.
  • 1/2 tsp vanilla extract Enhances the sweetness and overall flavor.
  • a pinch salt To balance the sweetness.
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans Optional for added crunch and texture.

Method

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). This ensures your dish cooks evenly.
  2. In a large pot, bring water to a boil and add the sweet potato slices. Boil until just tender, about 10-12 minutes. Drain and set aside.
Making the Syrup
  1. In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat. Add brown sugar, water, cinnamon, nutmeg, vanilla extract, and a pinch of salt. Stir well and bring to a gentle simmer.
Combining and Baking
  1. Add the cooked sweet potatoes to the syrup and gently stir to coat them evenly.
  2. Transfer the sweet potatoes to a greased baking dish and pour the remaining syrup over the top. Cover with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes, stirring halfway through.
  3. If using chopped pecans, sprinkle them on top during the last 10 minutes of baking.
Serving
  1. Remove from the oven and allow to cool slightly before serving.

Notes

For the best results, choose medium-sized sweet potatoes and adjust the sweetness to your preference. You can also experiment with additional spices or texture variations, such as mashing some of the sweet potatoes.
