Ingredients

For the Sandwich
  • 2 pieces bagels (your choice of flavor) Opt for whole-grain or gluten-free if desired.
  • 1 medium pear, thinly sliced
  • 1 medium apple, thinly sliced
  • 1 cup sharp cheddar cheese, shredded Can substitute with gouda or brie.
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced Yellow or red onion works best.
  • 2 tablespoons butter Can substitute with avocado oil for a healthier option.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Optional: Honey for drizzling Add for extra sweetness if desired.

Method

Caramelizing Onions
  1. In a skillet, heat the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced onion, seasoning it with salt and pepper.
  3. Cook slowly, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized, which should take about 15-20 minutes. Once caramelized, remove from heat.
Preparing the Sandwich
  1. While the onions are cooking, slice the bagels in half. If desired, lightly toast them.
  2. On one half of each bagel, layer the caramelized onions, sliced pears, sliced apples, and shredded cheddar cheese.
  3. Place the other half of the bagel on top to create the sandwich.
Grilling
  1. Wipe the skillet clean and place it back on medium heat. Add a little butter to the skillet.
  2. Place the assembled sandwiches in the pan and grill for about 3-4 minutes on each side, pressing down gently with a spatula.
  3. Aim for a golden brown exterior and melted cheese inside.
Serving
  1. Remove the sandwiches from the skillet and drizzle with honey if desired.
  2. Slice in half and enjoy your delicious sandwich!

Notes

For a gourmet experience, consider adding a sprinkle of fresh thyme or rosemary. Variations include using different cheeses or adding spinach for an extra crunch.
