Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line two baking sheets with parchment paper or silicone baking mats.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour and baking soda until combined; set aside.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter, granulated sugar, and brown sugar together until light and fluffy (about 3 minutes).
  4. Add in the vanilla extract and eggs, mixing well after each addition.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until just combined.
  6. Fold in the semisweet chocolate chips gently.
  7. Scoop tablespoon-sized portions of dough and shape them into small balls on the prepared baking sheets.
  8. Using a heart-shaped cookie cutter, press down on the dough balls to form heart shapes.
Baking
  1. Bake for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown but the centers remain slightly soft.
  2. Let the cookies sit on the baking sheets for about 5 minutes before transferring them to wire racks to cool completely.

Notes

Chill the Dough: If time permits, chill the dough for about 30 minutes to enhance flavor and shape. Consider adding chopped nuts or using different types of chocolate for variations. Store in an airtight container for up to a week or freeze for three months.
