Preparation
  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. In a large bowl, cream together the butter and powdered sugar until light and fluffy.
  3. Add the egg and vanilla extract to the creamed mixture and mix until well combined.
  4. In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, mixing until the dough comes together.
  6. Divide the dough into two portions; if too soft, wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
Baking
  1. Roll out the chilled dough on a floured surface to about 1/4 inch thickness.
  2. Use cookie cutters to cut out shapes like chicks and flowers.
  3. Place the shaped cookies onto the baking sheet, leaving gaps between each.
  4. Bake for 8-10 minutes until the edges are lightly golden.
  5. Allow cookies to cool on a wire rack.
Decorating
  1. Prepare the icing by dividing it into bowls and adding food coloring.
  2. Pipe and decorate cooled cookies using the colored icing.
  3. Let the decorated cookies dry completely before serving.
