Method
 

Preparation
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
  3. In a large bowl, cream the softened butter with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the creamed mixture; mix until well combined.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, combining until consistent dough forms.
  6. Divide the dough into two halves and roll each out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
  7. Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and arrange them on prepared baking sheets.
Baking
  1. Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges start to turn lightly golden.
  2. Allow cooling completely on a wire rack.
Decorating
  1. In a mixing bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, meringue powder, and 5 tablespoons of water until smooth.
  2. Divide the icing into two bowls—color one red and leave the other white.
  3. Transfer the icing into piping bags with small round tips and decorate the cookies as desired.
  4. Sprinkle decorated cookies with edible sprinkles or pearls.
  5. Allow royal icing to set fully before serving.
