Preparation
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.
- In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt.
- In a large bowl, cream the softened butter with the granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
- Add the egg, vanilla extract, and almond extract to the creamed mixture; mix until well combined.
- Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture, combining until consistent dough forms.
- Divide the dough into two halves and roll each out to a thickness of about 1/4 inch.
- Use heart-shaped cookie cutters to cut out cookies and arrange them on prepared baking sheets.
Baking
- Bake for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges start to turn lightly golden.
- Allow cooling completely on a wire rack.
Decorating
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together powdered sugar, meringue powder, and 5 tablespoons of water until smooth.
- Divide the icing into two bowls—color one red and leave the other white.
- Transfer the icing into piping bags with small round tips and decorate the cookies as desired.
- Sprinkle decorated cookies with edible sprinkles or pearls.
- Allow royal icing to set fully before serving.
Notes
For best results, chill the dough for easier handling and feel free to experiment with different flavors and decorations.
